NATIVE YOUTH OLYMPICS!
Darren demonstrates at Shageluk's
annual Spring Carnival the one foot high kick. In this picture
he went up to 8 feet! There are many activities that are done
in NYO and each year Shageluk participates in it. All of the activities
that are done are from all different cultures in Alaska. The cultures
challenged their youth to do these as a test of physical and emotional
strength. The young kids are taught at an early age so they could
represent Shageluk in the state battle!

Traditional Mask Dancing
A cultural event that happens yearly.
Kids and adults mask dance to traditional and spiritual songs.
We have done this for many generations and it still lives on within
us. There are singers, drummers, and dancers. All of the songs
that we sing go way back and has great meaning to us.
Immersion Camp!
A Language camp put on
by Project Promise. Here the kids learn Deg Xinag (our language)
and the native ways of our Athabaskan people.

SCIENCE
FAIR

Dwayne,
Sonta, Jordy, and Krista of Shageluk are getting interviewed
by three Elderly
Women at the AISES Science Fair in Fairbanks, Alaska. This year ( 99'-00')
all of the Shageluk
kids
won grand prize and went to state!
Many
of the project we choose to do have to be about our culture
but also
tied in with the western/modern science.
