| MARCH 7: COMMUNICATIONS ON THE TRAIL! |
Melanie Workman, Grade 11 and Justin Arrow, Grade 9:
| Melanie: The GCI communications came today to set up internet connectivity and a land phone for the race as it passes through Shageluk. I interviewed Janis Young, she's from Seattle, Washington. She been working with the Iditarod for several years now. In 1987, she was interested in the Iditarod. Dee Dee Jonrowe came to her office and asked her if she was interested in the Iditarod. Dee Dee was telling Janis and her friends how the Iditarod works and how she does things. She was telling them how winter is and how cold it is here in Alaska. Dee Dee brought her dogs in to the meeting.
Janis is a communication's volunteer. She is taking phone calls from Anchorage headquarters, letting them know what's going on out here and when the mushers come and go. Some of the equipment the communication specialists use are pages; it helps them know where the mushers are. Justin: I interviewed this Communication's Specialist, Jean Pollack. She comes from New Jersey. She is also a teacher and uses the Iditarod Sled Dog Race in her classroom. Thank you, Jean! As of today, March 8, they are waiting for the mushers to come and are excited for them to come in! |
